  Auxentios

  Venerable, Αυξέντιος

  St. Auxentios lived in the fifth century and served for a time at the imperial court in Constantinople before forsaking the world for the life of a hermit. He settled on a mountain in Bithynia, not far from Chalcedon, where he lived in a small cell in fasting and prayer, receiving the many who climbed to him for counsel and healing.

• Maron the Hermit

  Venerable, Μάρων

  St. Maron lived in the open air on a mountain near Cyrrhus in Syria, where he turned a former pagan temple into a place of prayer. Theodoret records that he received the gift of healing and delivered many from illness and demons.

• Valentine the Hieromartyr

  Hierarch, Βαλεντίνος

  Two martyrs named Valentine are commemorated on this day: a presbyter of Rome and the Bishop of Terni in Italy, both of whom suffered in the third century. Tradition relates that they healed the sick and brought many to Christ, for which they were arrested and beheaded.

• George Paizanos of Mytilene

  Martyr, Γεώργιος ο Παϊζάνος

  St. George, called Paizanos, was born on the island of Lesvos and worked as a tailor. Tradition relates that he was denounced to the Turkish authorities in Constantinople and pressed to change his faith.

• Nicholas of Psari

  Martyr, Νικόλαος ο εξ Ιχθύος

  St. Nicholas was born in the village of Psari in Corinthia and, orphaned young, went to Selymbria where he married, and later worked as a grocer in Constantinople. Falsely accused of having accepted Islam, he was imprisoned and tortured.

• Nicholas of Trebizond

  Hierarch, Νικόλαος ο Τραπεζούντιος

  St. Nicholas came from Trebizond and lived in the region of Amaseia in Pontus. From youth he wished to dedicate himself to God, and after the death of his wife and child he became a priest and served the faithful with zeal.

• Philemon of Gaza

  Hierarch, Φιλήμων Γάζης

  St. Philemon, Bishop of Gaza, is recorded in an early Patmian manuscript as a hieromartyr of the Church. No further details of his life have been preserved.
