Abraham was called by God to leave his homeland and go to the land of promise, and received the promise that in his seed all nations would be blessed. He is honored as the father of the faithful for his obedience, above all in his readiness to offer his son Isaac.
Lot, his nephew, lived righteously among the wicked of Sodom and was delivered by angels before the city's destruction.
