Poplia the Confessor

Saint Poplia the Confessor, deaconess of Antioch, who defied Julian the Apostate.

Poplia was a widow of Antioch who raised her son John as a Christian and became a deaconess, gathering a choir of virgins about her. When the emperor Julian the Apostate passed by, she led them in singing psalms mocking the idols.

The emperor had her beaten, but she did not cease, and she reposed in peace in the fourth century honored as a confessor.

On the New Calendar, Poplia the Confessor is commemorated on October 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 22 of the civil calendar.
