Tikhon Patriarch of Moscow

Saint Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and Enlightener of North America, confessor under the Bolsheviks.

Born Vasily Belavin in 1865, he served as Bishop of the Aleutians and North America, establishing dioceses and the first Orthodox seminary in the United States. In 1917 he was elected Patriarch of Moscow, the first after two centuries.

He led the Church through the Bolshevik persecution, enduring imprisonment, and reposed in 1925. He was glorified in 1989; this day commemorates his glorification.

On the New Calendar, Tikhon Patriarch of Moscow is commemorated on October 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 22 of the civil calendar.
