  James the Apostle of Alphaeus

  Apostle, Ιάκωβος Αλφαίου

  St. James the son of Alphaeus was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by the Lord, named in each of the Gospel lists of the Twelve. After Pentecost he went forth, as the apostles did, to preach the Gospel among the nations, and tradition relates that he ended his labors as a martyr for Christ.

• Andronikos and Athanasia

  Venerable, Ανδρόνικος και Αθανασία

  Andronikos was a goldsmith of Antioch in the fifth century, married to Athanasia; they gave a third of their earnings to the poor and lived in piety. When both of their children died on the same day, they resolved to give themselves wholly to God.

• Poplia the Confessor

  Holy Woman, Ποπλία η Ομολογήτρια

  Poplia was a widow of Antioch who raised her son John as a Christian and became a deaconess, gathering a choir of virgins about her. When the emperor Julian the Apostate passed by, she led them in singing psalms mocking the idols.

• Peter the Former Soldier

  Venerable, Πέτρος ο από στρατιωτών

  Born Leo in Galatia, he served in the imperial army under the iconoclast emperor Theophilos and was taken captive by the Arabs. Delivered from prison through prayer, he vowed himself to God and became a monk with the name Peter.

• Tikhon Patriarch of Moscow

  Hierarch, Τύχων Πατριάρχης Μόσχας

  Born Vasily Belavin in 1865, he served as Bishop of the Aleutians and North America, establishing dioceses and the first Orthodox seminary in the United States. In 1917 he was elected Patriarch of Moscow, the first after two centuries.
