  Eulampios and Eulampia

  Martyr, Ευλάμπιος

  Saints Eulampios and Eulampia were brother and sister, Christians of Nicomedia during the persecution under the Emperor Maximian at the beginning of the fourth century. When Eulampios was seized and tortured for confessing Christ, his sister Eulampia openly declared her own faith so that she might share his sufferings, and together they endured torment and received the crown of martyrdom.

• Theophilos and Longinus the Stylite

  Venerable, Θεόφιλος και Λογγίνος ο Στυλίτης

  Theophilos the Confessor and Longinus the Stylite are commemorated together in the Synaxarion of this day. Theophilos suffered for the holy icons, and Longinus lived in asceticism upon a pillar.

• Bassianos of Constantinople

  Venerable, Βασιανός

  Bassianos came from Syria to Constantinople in the reign of the emperor Marcian and built a monastery where some three hundred monks gathered under his rule. He was honored by the emperor and the empress Pulcheria.

• Ambrose of Optina

  Venerable, Αμβρόσιος της Όπτινα

  Born Alexander Grenkov in 1812, he entered Optina after a vow made in illness and became the disciple of the elders Leonid and Macarius. Despite lifelong sickness he received thousands of pilgrims, giving counsel marked by warmth and humor.

• Twenty-six Martyrs of Zographou

  Saint, Είκοσι Έξι Οσιομάρτυρες Ζωγραφίτες

  When the emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos tried to impose union with Rome, Latin troops came to the Holy Mountain to force the monks to submit. Twenty-six fathers of the Bulgarian monastery of Zographou, led by the abbot Thomas, refused and shut themselves in the tower.

• Andrew of Totma

  Saint, Ανδρέας της Τότμα

  Andrew was born in 1638 near Totma in northern Russia and from youth took up the ascetic path of foolishness for Christ under the blessing of a monastic elder. He lived by a church in Totma, going barefoot in winter and giving away all he received.
