The twenty-six Monk-Martyrs of Zographou Monastery on Mount Athos, burned by the Latinizers in 1276.
When the emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos tried to impose union with Rome, Latin troops came to the Holy Mountain to force the monks to submit. Twenty-six fathers of the Bulgarian monastery of Zographou, led by the abbot Thomas, refused and shut themselves in the tower.
The tower was set on fire and they perished confessing the Orthodox faith. Tradition relates that the Theotokos had forewarned them through her icon, which was preserved unharmed.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Twenty-six Martyrs of Zographou is commemorated on October 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 23 of the civil calendar.
