Venerable Ambrose, the great elder of Optina Monastery.
Born Alexander Grenkov in 1812, he entered Optina after a vow made in illness and became the disciple of the elders Leonid and Macarius. Despite lifelong sickness he received thousands of pilgrims, giving counsel marked by warmth and humor.
He founded the Shamordino convent and reposed in 1891; he was glorified in 1988 and is one of the most beloved of the Optina elders.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Ambrose of Optina is commemorated on October 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 23 of the civil calendar.
