  Philip the Apostle (Deacon)

  Apostle, Φίλιππος

  St. Philip was one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles to serve the early Church in Jerusalem, as the Acts of the Apostles relates. Full of the Holy Spirit, he preached Christ in Samaria with great power, and on the desert road he baptized the Ethiopian eunuch, opening the Gospel to the nations.

• Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council

  Saint, Ζ' Οικουμενική Σύνοδος

  In 787, under the empress Irene and Patriarch Tarasios, some three hundred and fifty bishops gathered at Nicaea and condemned the iconoclast heresy. They declared that the honor given to an icon passes to its prototype, and that icons of Christ, the Theotokos and the saints are to be venerated but not worshipped.

• Theophanes the Branded

  Hierarch, Θεοφάνης ο Γραπτός

  Theophanes and his elder brother Theodore, monks of the Lavra of Saint Sabbas in Palestine, were sent to Constantinople to defend the holy icons. The iconoclast emperor Theophilos had insulting verses tattooed on their faces, whence their name the Branded, and sent them into exile.

• Nektarios, Arsakios and Sisinios of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Νεκτάριος, Αρσάκιος και Σισίνιος

  Nektarios, a senator of Tarsus, was chosen Patriarch while still a catechumen and presided at the Second Ecumenical Council in 381, reposing in 397. Arsakios, the brother of Nektarios, briefly held the throne after the exile of Saint John Chrysostom.

• Zenaida and Philonilla

  Holy Woman, Ζηναΐδα και Φιλονίλλα

  Zenaida and Philonilla were sisters from Tarsus in Cilicia, related to the Apostle Paul, who studied medicine and used their art to serve the sick freely in the name of Christ.

• Philotheos Kokkinos

  Hierarch, Φιλόθεος ο Κόκκινος

  Philotheos was born in Thessalonica and became a monk on Mount Athos, where he was abbot of the Great Lavra and a close friend of Saint Gregory Palamas. He served as Metropolitan of Heraclea and twice as Patriarch of Constantinople in the fourteenth century.

• Jonas of Pergamos

  Venerable, Ιωνάς ο εν Περγάμω

  Jonas was a Cypriot ascetic who, tradition relates, lived near the village of Pergamos in the Larnaca district. He is remembered as a disciple and companion of Saint John Lampadistis and a man of prayer and miracles.
