Theophanes the Branded

Saint Theophanes the Confessor and Hymnographer, Bishop of Nicaea, called the Branded.

Theophanes and his elder brother Theodore, monks of the Lavra of Saint Sabbas in Palestine, were sent to Constantinople to defend the holy icons. The iconoclast emperor Theophilos had insulting verses tattooed on their faces, whence their name the Branded, and sent them into exile.

After the restoration of the icons Theophanes was made Bishop of Nicaea. He composed many canons and reposed in peace around 847.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theophanes the Branded is commemorated on October 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 24 of the civil calendar.
