Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council

Commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, which upheld the veneration of the holy icons.

In 787, under the empress Irene and Patriarch Tarasios, some three hundred and fifty bishops gathered at Nicaea and condemned the iconoclast heresy. They declared that the honor given to an icon passes to its prototype, and that icons of Christ, the Theotokos and the saints are to be venerated but not worshipped.

The Church commemorates these Fathers on the Sunday falling on or after October 11.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council is commemorated on October 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 24 of the civil calendar.
