Philotheos Kokkinos

Saint Philotheos Kokkinos, Patriarch of Constantinople, defender of the hesychasts.

Philotheos was born in Thessalonica and became a monk on Mount Athos, where he was abbot of the Great Lavra and a close friend of Saint Gregory Palamas. He served as Metropolitan of Heraclea and twice as Patriarch of Constantinople in the fourteenth century.

He presided over the council that confirmed the teaching of Palamas, composed his life and service, and wrote many hymns and theological works before reposing around 1379.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Philotheos Kokkinos is commemorated on October 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 24 of the civil calendar.
