Alexis Toth

Saint Alexis Toth, confessor and defender of Orthodoxy in America.

Alexis Toth was born in 1854 to a Carpatho-Rusyn family in what is now Slovakia and was ordained a Greek Catholic priest. Sent to Minneapolis, he was rejected by the Latin archbishop, and in 1891 he and his parish returned to the Orthodox Church.

He spent the rest of his life bringing thousands of Rusyn immigrants back to Orthodoxy across the United States, reposing in 1909. He was glorified in 1994.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Alexis Toth is commemorated on May 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 20 of the civil calendar.
