John Psychaites

Venerable John the Confessor, abbot of the Psycha Monastery in Constantinople during the Iconoclast persecution.

John was abbot of the Psycha Monastery in Constantinople in the ninth century. For his defense of the holy icons he was exiled and suffered much at the hands of the Iconoclast emperors.

He returned after the restoration of the icons and reposed in peace, honored as a confessor.

On the New Calendar, John Psychaites is commemorated on May 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 20 of the civil calendar.
