Venerable Anthousa the Confessor, abbess who suffered for the holy icons.
St. Anthousa was an abbess in the eighth century who defended the veneration of the holy icons during the iconoclast persecution. Tradition relates that she was tortured and exiled by the emperor Constantine Copronymus.
She returned to her convent and reposed in peace as a confessor.

On the New Calendar, Anthousa the Confessor is commemorated on July 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 9 of the civil calendar.
