Athanasios of Brest

Hieromartyr Athanasios, abbot of Brest, who suffered for Orthodoxy.

St. Athanasios was abbot of the monastery of Brest-Litovsk in the seventeenth century and a fearless defender of Orthodoxy against the Unia. Arrested on false charges, he was shot in 1648.

This day commemorates the uncovering of his relics; his main feast is September 5.

On the New Calendar, Athanasios of Brest is commemorated on July 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 2 of the civil calendar.
