  Elijah the Prophet

  Great Feast, Ηλίας ο Προφήτης

  The Holy Prophet Elijah the Tishbite lived in the ninth century before Christ, in the days of King Ahab of Israel. Zealous for the Lord against the worship of Baal, he shut the heavens by his prayer, was fed by ravens at the brook Cherith, raised the son of the widow of Zarephath, and called down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel. He was taken up alive toward heaven in a chariot of fire, leaving his mantle to his disciple Elisha.

• Abramios of Galich

  Venerable, Αβραάμ του Γκάλιτς

  St. Abramios was a disciple of St. Sergius of Radonezh who withdrew to the wilderness near Galich in northern Russia, where he founded several monasteries. He labored in preaching to the local people.

• Maria Skobtsova and those with her

  Saint, Μαρία Σκόμπτσοβα

  St. Maria (Skobtsova) was a Russian nun in Paris who devoted herself to the poor, refugees and, during the war, the persecuted Jews. She was arrested with her son Yuri, the priest Dimitri Klepinin and Ilya Fondaminsky, and died in the Ravensbruck camp in 1945.

• Athanasios of Brest

  Hierarch, Αθανάσιος Μπρεστ

  St. Athanasios was abbot of the monastery of Brest-Litovsk in the seventeenth century and a fearless defender of Orthodoxy against the Unia. Arrested on false charges, he was shot in 1648.
