  Makrina the Elder

  Holy Woman, Μακρίνα

  St. Makrina belonged to the extraordinary Cappadocian family of saints that gave the Church St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory of Nyssa. A woman of deep piety and steadfast faith, she devoted herself to prayer and the ascetic life, and through her teaching and example the Orthodox faith was handed down within a household that produced some of the greatest fathers of the Church.

• Dios of Antioch

  Venerable, Δίος

  St. Dios was born in Antioch and lived as an ascetic before coming to Constantinople in the reign of Theodosios the Great, where he founded a monastery. Tradition relates that he was granted the gift of working miracles.

• Theodore of Edessa

  Hierarch, Θεόδωρος Εδέσσης

  St. Theodore was born in Edessa and became a monk at the Lavra of St. Savva in Palestine, where he was known for asceticism and learning. He was later consecrated Bishop of Edessa and labored to strengthen the Orthodox there.

• Finding of the Relics of Seraphim of Sarov

  Saint, Σεραφείμ του Σάρωφ

  This day commemorates the uncovering of the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov in 1903, at his glorification by the Russian Church. St. Seraphim, who reposed in 1833, is one of the most beloved of Russian saints, known for his teaching on the acquisition of the Holy Spirit.

• Fathers of the Fourth Ecumenical Council

  Saint, Πατέρες Δ' Οικουμενικής Συνόδου

  The Fourth Ecumenical Council met at Chalcedon in 451 and confirmed the Orthodox faith that Christ is one Person in two natures, divine and human. Its Fathers are commemorated on the Sunday between July 13 and 19 together with the Fathers of the first six Councils.

• Diokles the Venerable

  Venerable, Διοκλής

  St. Diokles is commemorated as an ascetic who left the world to live in prayer and fasting. Little is recorded of his life beyond his ascetic labors.
