Theodore of Edessa

St. Theodore the Sabbaite, Bishop of Edessa.

St. Theodore was born in Edessa and became a monk at the Lavra of St. Savva in Palestine, where he was known for asceticism and learning. He was later consecrated Bishop of Edessa and labored to strengthen the Orthodox there.

He reposed in peace in the ninth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theodore of Edessa is commemorated on July 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 1 of the civil calendar.
