Barbarus of Pentapolis

Venerable Barbarus the former brigand, ascetic and wonderworker of Pentapolis.

Saint Barbarus, tradition relates, was a brigand who came to repentance and spent years in severe penance, living among the animals in the mountains. He was killed by hunters who mistook him for a wild beast, and his relics, venerated in western Greece, became a source of healing. The synaxaria also commemorate him in May.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Barbarus of Pentapolis is commemorated on June 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 6 of the civil calendar.
