  Agrippina

  Holy Woman, Αγριππίνη

  The Holy Martyr Agrippina was a Christian maiden of Rome who suffered for Christ in the third century. Raised in piety, she adorned herself not with gold but with chastity and prayer, and when persecution came she confessed the Lord openly and died under torture rather than deny Him.

• Aristocles, Demetrian and Athanasius, Martyrs of Cyprus

  Martyr, Αριστοκλής, Δημητριανός και Αθανάσιος

  Saint Aristocles was a priest of Tamassos in Cyprus who, tradition relates, was called by a heavenly voice to go to Salamis and confess Christ. He was joined by the deacon Demetrian and the reader Athanasius. All three were arrested and beheaded there in the early fourth century, under Maximian.

• Eustochius, Gaius, Probus, Lollius and Urban of Ancyra

  Martyr, Ευστόχιος και οι συν αυτώ

  Saint Eustochius was a pagan priest who, witnessing the courage of the Christian martyrs, was converted and later ordained priest at Antioch. He brought his nephew Gaius and the children Probus, Lollius and Urban to the faith, and all were arrested at Ancyra in Galatia and put to death under Maximian.

• Hieromartyrs of Crete, Gerasimos of Crete and Companions

  Hierarch, Γεράσιμος Κρήτης και οι συν αυτώ

  In June 1821, at the outbreak of the Greek revolution, the Ottoman authorities in Heraklion put to death Metropolitan Gerasimos of Crete and the bishops of Knossos, Chersonissos, Lampi, Sitia, Petra, Rethymno, Kydonia, Kissamos and Diopolis, together with many priests, monks and lay people, in the cathedral of Saint Menas and elsewhere on the island.

• Barbarus of Pentapolis

  Venerable, Βάρβαρος ο Πενταπολίτης

  Saint Barbarus, tradition relates, was a brigand who came to repentance and spent years in severe penance, living among the animals in the mountains. He was killed by hunters who mistook him for a wild beast, and his relics, venerated in western Greece, became a source of healing. The synaxaria also commemorate him in May.

• Etheldreda of Ely

  Holy Woman, Εθελδρέδα

  Saint Etheldreda was a princess of East Anglia who, though twice married, preserved her virginity and finally received the monastic habit. She founded the monastery of Ely and served as its abbess until her repose in 679. Her relics were found incorrupt, and her shrine at Ely was one of the great pilgrimage places of England.
