  Eusebios of Samosata

  Hierarch, Ευσέβιος

  St. Eusebios, Bishop of Samosata, was one of the great champions of the Nicene faith in the fourth century, a friend and fellow struggler of St. Basil the Great. In the years when Arianism held the empire, he traveled through the East, tradition says even in disguise, strengthening the faithful and ordaining Orthodox clergy, and for this he was driven into exile under the emperor Valens.

• Zeno and Zenas of Philadelphia

  Martyr, Ζήνων και Ζηνάς

  Saint Zeno was a wealthy Christian of Philadelphia in Arabia who freed his slaves and gave away his goods. When he rebuked the governor for persecuting Christians he was arrested, and his former servant Zenas, refusing to leave him, shared his imprisonment. Both were beheaded in the early fourth century.

  Martyr, Γαλακτίων, Ιουλιανή και Σατορνίνος

  Saint Galaction, tradition relates, was drowned for his confession of Christ, while Saint Juliana and her son Saturninus were burned. The synaxaria commemorate them together as martyrs of Constantinople.

• Gregory the Teacher, Metropolitan of Wallachia

  Hierarch, Γρηγόριος ο Διδάσκαλος

  Saint Gregory, called the Teacher, was a monk of Neamts formed in the tradition of Saint Paisius Velichkovsky, and devoted himself to translating the writings of the Fathers into Romanian. He became metropolitan of Wallachia in 1823, laboured for the education of clergy and the care of the poor, and endured exile for his defence of the Church.
