  Nativity of John the Baptist

  Great Feast, Γέννηση Ιωάννου Προδρόμου

  The Nativity of St. John the Forerunner is celebrated on June 24, six months before the Nativity of Christ. The Gospel of Luke recounts how the Archangel Gabriel announced to the aged priest Zacharias that his barren wife Elizabeth would bear a son; struck mute for his doubt, Zacharias regained his speech at the naming of the child and prophesied that the boy would be called the prophet of the Most High.

• Athanasius Parios

  Venerable, Αθανάσιος ο Πάριος

  Saint Athanasius was born on Paros in 1721 and studied in Smyrna and at the Athonite Academy under Eugenios Voulgaris. He taught in Thessaloniki, Corfu and Chios and, with Saints Nikodemos the Hagiorite and Makarios of Corinth, was a leader of the Kollyvades renewal that called for frequent communion and fidelity to the tradition of the Fathers.

• Righteous Zacharias and Elizabeth

  Saint, Ζαχαρίας και Ελισάβετ

  On the day after the Nativity of the Forerunner the Church remembers his parents, the priest Zacharias and Elizabeth, kinswoman of the Theotokos. Barren until old age, they received the promise of a son from the archangel Gabriel, and Zacharias, struck dumb for his doubt, prophesied at the child's naming. Their principal feast is kept on 5 September.

• Panagiotis of Caesarea, New Martyr

  Martyr, Παναγιώτης ο Καισαρεύς

  Saint Panagiotis was born in Caesarea of Cappadocia and worked as a young man in Constantinople. Tradition relates that he was falsely accused of insulting the Muslim faith and, refusing to save his life by conversion, confessed Christ boldly and was beheaded in 1765.
