Righteous Zacharias and Elizabeth

Synaxis of the Righteous Zacharias and Elizabeth, parents of Saint John the Baptist.

On the day after the Nativity of the Forerunner the Church remembers his parents, the priest Zacharias and Elizabeth, kinswoman of the Theotokos. Barren until old age, they received the promise of a son from the archangel Gabriel, and Zacharias, struck dumb for his doubt, prophesied at the child's naming. Their principal feast is kept on 5 September.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Righteous Zacharias and Elizabeth is commemorated on June 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 7 of the civil calendar.
