Basil of Rostov

Right-believing Prince Basil (Vasilko) of Rostov, martyred by the Mongols.

St. Basil (Vasilko) was Prince of Rostov in the thirteenth century. Captured by the Mongols after the battle on the river Sit in 1238, he refused to renounce Christ or to serve the invaders, and was put to death.

His body was recovered and buried in the cathedral of Rostov. The Church honors him as a righteous prince and passion-bearer on March 4.

On the New Calendar, Basil of Rostov is commemorated on March 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 17 of the civil calendar.
