Gregory of Assos

Saint Gregory, Bishop of Assos in Asia Minor, wonderworker.

St. Gregory was born on the island of Lesbos and became Bishop of Assos on the coast of Asia Minor, probably in the twelfth century. Tradition relates that he was a man of great humility and prayer who, driven from his see by slander, returned to Lesbos and founded a monastery, where he reposed in peace.

He is venerated especially on Lesbos, and his memory is kept on March 4.

On the New Calendar, Gregory of Assos is commemorated on March 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 17 of the civil calendar.
