Hieromartyr Boniface, apostle of the Germans, archbishop of Mainz, slain by pagans in Frisia.
Saint Boniface was an Englishman named Winfrid who left his monastery to preach the Gospel among the Germanic peoples in the eighth century. He founded churches and monasteries, including Fulda, and became archbishop of Mainz.
In old age he returned to missionary work in Frisia, where he and his companions were killed by pagans in 754. He is honoured as the enlightener of Germany.
