  Dorotheus of Tyre

  Hierarch, Δωρόθεος

  The Holy Hieromartyr Dorotheus was Bishop of Tyre in Phoenicia. He suffered exile in the great persecution under Diocletian, returned to his flock in the peace of the Church, and shepherded them for many years as a learned and holy elder. In extreme old age, tradition tells, he was seized in the days of Julian the Apostate and died a martyr from the torments inflicted on him.

• Mark the New Martyr of Chios

  Martyr, Μάρκος ο εν Χίω

  Saint Mark was born in Smyrna. Tradition relates that after a moral fall he renounced his faith, but soon repented and, after preparing himself in prayer, went to Chios, where he publicly confessed Christ before the Turkish authorities. He was beheaded there on 5 June 1801.

• Ten Martyrs of Egypt

  Martyr, Δέκα Μάρτυρες εν Αιγύπτω

  These ten Egyptian Christians confessed Christ during the persecution under Maximian and, tradition relates, were tortured and then left to die of hunger and thirst in the desert, thereby receiving the crown of martyrdom.

• Boniface of Germany

  Hierarch, Βονιφάτιος ο Γερμανίας

  Saint Boniface was an Englishman named Winfrid who left his monastery to preach the Gospel among the Germanic peoples in the eighth century. He founded churches and monasteries, including Fulda, and became archbishop of Mainz.

• Theodore Yaroslavich of Novgorod

  Saint, Θεόδωρος ο Δούκας

  Prince Theodore was the elder brother of Saint Alexander Nevsky and ruled Novgorod with him as a youth. He died suddenly in 1233 on the eve of his wedding, and his incorrupt relics, discovered later, were venerated at Novgorod.

• Christopher and Conon of Rome

  Martyr, Χριστόφορος και Κόνων

  Saints Christopher and Conon are remembered in the synaxaria as martyrs who suffered for Christ in Rome. The details of their contest have not been preserved beyond the record that they died by the sword for their confession.
