New Martyr Mark of Smyrna, beheaded on Chios in 1801 after returning to Christ with repentance.
Saint Mark was born in Smyrna. Tradition relates that after a moral fall he renounced his faith, but soon repented and, after preparing himself in prayer, went to Chios, where he publicly confessed Christ before the Turkish authorities. He was beheaded there on 5 June 1801.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Mark the New Martyr of Chios is commemorated on June 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 18 of the civil calendar.
