Holy New Martyr Chrysi (Zlata) of Meglena, the virgin who suffered under the Turks in 1795.
Chrysi was born to a poor Christian family in the village of Slatena in the region of Meglena in Macedonia. Renowned for her beauty, she was seized by a Turk who tried to force her to accept Islam and become his wife.
She refused steadfastly through months of torture and the pleas of her own family, and was finally hanged from a tree in 1795. Her memory is honored by Greeks and Bulgarians alike.

On the New Calendar, Chrysi the New Martyr is commemorated on October 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 26 of the civil calendar.
