Jacob of Hamatoura

Holy Monk-Martyr Jacob of Hamatoura in Lebanon, who suffered under the Mamluks.

Jacob was abbot of the monastery of the Dormition at Hamatoura in northern Lebanon in the thirteenth century, where he restored the monastic life. Seized by the Mamluk rulers of Tripoli, he was pressed for a year to accept Islam.

He refused and was beheaded and burned; his relics were discovered at the monastery in 1996 and he was glorified by the Patriarchate of Antioch.

On the New Calendar, Jacob of Hamatoura is commemorated on October 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 26 of the civil calendar.
