St. Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, champion of the title Theotokos.
St. Cyril was Archbishop of Alexandria in the fifth century. He presided at the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus in 431, which condemned Nestorius and confirmed that the Virgin Mary is truly Theotokos, the Mother of God.
A prolific theologian and commentator on Scripture, he reposed in 444. He is commemorated with St. Athanasios on January 18, and alone on June 9.
