• Athanasios the Great

  Hierarch, Αθανάσιος ο Μέγας

  St. Athanasios the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria, was born about the year 297 and as a young deacon accompanied his bishop to the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, where he stood against Arius in defense of the divinity of Christ. Made bishop of Alexandria in 328, he was driven into exile five times by Arian emperors yet never yielded, so that it was said of him: Athanasius against the world.

• Cyril of Alexandria

  Hierarch, Κύριλλος Αλεξανδρείας

  St. Cyril was Archbishop of Alexandria in the fifth century. He presided at the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus in 431, which condemned Nestorius and confirmed that the Virgin Mary is truly Theotokos, the Mother of God.

• Theodoule the Martyr

  Holy Woman, Θεοδούλη

  St. Theodoule was a Christian woman of Anazarbus in Cilicia who suffered in the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition relates that her steadfastness under torture led her tormentors Helladios, Evagrios, Makarios and Boethos to believe in Christ, and they were martyred with her.

• Markianos of Cyrrhus

  St. Markianos was a nobleman of Cyrrhus in Syria in the fourth century who withdrew into the desert and enclosed himself in a small cell, living in silence and strict fasting. Disciples gathered around him, and his fame drew many visitors, whom he taught with wisdom.

• Joachim of Trnovo

  Hierarch, Ιωακείμ Τυρνόβου

  St. Joachim was a monk of Mount Athos who returned to Bulgaria and founded a monastery on the river Danube. He was chosen as the first Patriarch of Trnovo after the restoration of the Bulgarian patriarchate in 1235 and governed the Church with holiness.
