  Anthony the Great

  Venerable, Αντώνιος ο Μέγας

  St. Anthony the Great, the father of monasticism, was born in Egypt in the middle of the third century. Hearing in church the Gospel call to sell all, give to the poor, and follow Christ, he gave away his inheritance and withdrew into the desert, where he spent the rest of his long life in prayer, labor, and fierce spiritual struggle.

• George of Ioannina

  Martyr, Γεώργιος ο εξ Ιωαννίνων

  St. George was a poor man from a village of Epirus who served as a groom in Ioannina. Accused by Muslims of having abandoned Islam, though he had always been a Christian, he refused every inducement to convert and was hanged in Ioannina in 1838.

• Anthony the New of Veria

  Venerable, Αντώνιος ο Νέος

  St. Anthony the New was born in Veria in Macedonia and lived as a hermit in a cave by the river Haliacmon, where tradition relates he spent many years in solitude and was granted the gift of miracles. His relics are venerated in Veria, of which he is the patron.

  Saint, Θεοδόσιος ο Μέγας

  St. Theodosios the Great was Roman emperor from 379 to 395. He established the Nicene faith as the faith of the empire, convened the Second Ecumenical Council at Constantinople in 381, and did public penance before St. Ambrose of Milan after the massacre at Thessaloniki.

• Achillas the Venerable

  Venerable, Αχιλλάς

  St. Achillas was one of the desert fathers of Scetis in Egypt in the fourth and fifth centuries, whose sayings are preserved among those of the elders. He was known for the severity of his fasting and for his discretion toward the brethren.

• Anthony of Meteora

  Venerable, Αντώνιος ο Μετεωρίτης

  St. Anthony of Meteora, of the Kantakouzenos family according to tradition, was a monk of the Meteora in Thessaly in the fifteenth century, associated with the monastery of St. Stephen. He lived in asceticism on the rocks and reposed in peace.
