George of Ioannina

New Martyr George of Ioannina, martyred in 1838.

St. George was a poor man from a village of Epirus who served as a groom in Ioannina. Accused by Muslims of having abandoned Islam, though he had always been a Christian, he refused every inducement to convert and was hanged in Ioannina in 1838.

His relics are venerated in the city, and he is one of the most beloved of the New Martyrs. He is commemorated on January 17.

On the New Calendar, George of Ioannina is commemorated on January 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 30 of the civil calendar.
