  Peter

  Martyr, Πέτρος

  On this day the Church venerates the precious chains of the holy Apostle Peter. The Acts of the Apostles relates how Peter, imprisoned by Herod and bound in chains, was freed in the night by an angel of the Lord, the chains falling from his hands as he was led out past the sleeping guards.

• Nikolaos of Mytilene

  Martyr, Νικόλαος ο Μυτιληναίος

  St. Nikolaos was born in Mytilene on Lesbos and worked in Constantinople. Tradition relates that after being falsely accused and pressed to accept Islam, he confessed Christ and was beheaded in 1771.

• Speusippos, Eleusippos and Meleusippos

  Martyr, Πεύσιππος, Ελάσιππος και Μέσιππος

  Sts. Speusippos, Eleusippos and Meleusippos were triplet brothers of Cappadocian origin who, tradition relates, were converted together with their grandmother Neonilla and suffered martyrdom in Gaul in the second century. Several others were converted by their example and martyred with them.

• Danax the Reader

  Martyr, Δάναξ

  St. Danax was a reader in the church of a town in Illyricum. When pagans attacked the church he fled with the sacred vessels; captured and ordered to sacrifice to Dionysus, he refused and was beheaded.

• Damaskinos the New

  Hierarch, Δαμασκηνός ο Νέος

  St. Damaskinos was a hieromonk of the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos who was sent to Bulgaria on monastery business. Falsely accused by Turks in Svishtov, he refused to save himself by denying Christ and was hanged in 1771.

• Romylos of Ravanica

  Venerable, Ρωμύλος ο Αγιορείτης

  St. Romylos was born in Vidin in the fourteenth century and became a disciple of St. Gregory of Sinai at Paroria. He later lived in stillness on Mount Athos and, when the Holy Mountain was troubled by invasions, went to Serbia and settled near the Ravanica Monastery, where he reposed.
