Damaskinos the New

New Hieromartyr Damaskinos of Hilandar, martyred in Bulgaria.

St. Damaskinos was a hieromonk of the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos who was sent to Bulgaria on monastery business. Falsely accused by Turks in Svishtov, he refused to save himself by denying Christ and was hanged in 1771.

He is commemorated on January 16.

On the New Calendar, Damaskinos the New is commemorated on January 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 29 of the civil calendar.
