  Paul of Thebes

  Venerable, Παύλος

  St. Paul of Thebes is honored as the first Christian hermit. Fleeing the persecution of Decius in the third century, he withdrew into the inner desert of Egypt, where he lived unknown to the world for many decades in fasting, solitude, and unceasing prayer.

• John the Kalyvites

  Venerable, Ιωάννης ο Καλυβίτης

  St. John the Kalyvites was the son of wealthy parents in Constantinople in the fifth century. Taking with him a Gospel book they had given him, he secretly entered a monastery; years later he returned home and, unrecognized, lived as a beggar in a hut at his parents' gate.

• Pansophios the Martyr

  Martyr, Πανσόφιος

  St. Pansophios was the son of a proconsul in Alexandria who, after his father's death, gave away his wealth and lived as an ascetic in the desert for many years. In the persecution of Decius he was brought before the governor and died under scourging.

• Gerasimos Palladas

  Hierarch, Γεράσιμος Παλλαδάς

  St. Gerasimos Palladas was born in Crete in the seventeenth century and, after serving as Metropolitan of Kastoria and Adrianople, became Patriarch of Alexandria in 1688. Resigning the throne, he retired to Mount Athos, where he reposed in 1714 at the Vatopedi Monastery.

• Alexander the Akoimetos

  Venerable, Αλέξανδρος ο Ακοίμητος

  St. Alexander was a monk of the early fifth century who established communities in Syria and later near Constantinople in which the brethren, divided into choirs, kept up unceasing praise of God by day and night; from this they were called the Akoimetoi, the Sleepless Ones.

  Martyr, Ελπίδιος, Δάναξ και Ελένη

  Sts. Elpidios, Danax and Helen are recorded in the synaxaria as martyrs who confessed Christ and were put to death for the faith. The details of their contest have not been preserved.
