John the Kalyvites

Venerable John the Hut-Dweller, who lived unknown at his parents' gate.

St. John the Kalyvites was the son of wealthy parents in Constantinople in the fifth century. Taking with him a Gospel book they had given him, he secretly entered a monastery; years later he returned home and, unrecognized, lived as a beggar in a hut at his parents' gate.

Only at his death did he reveal himself by the Gospel book. He is commemorated on January 15.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John the Kalyvites is commemorated on January 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 28 of the civil calendar.
