  Makarios of Egypt

  Venerable, Μακάριος

  St. Makarios of Egypt, called the Great, was one of the foremost of the desert fathers of the fourth century. Retiring to the desert of Scetis, he became the father of the monks who gathered there, renowned for his humility, his gentleness toward sinners, and his deep experience of prayer.

• Makarios of Alexandria

  Venerable, Μακάριος ο Αλεξανδρεύς

  St. Makarios of Alexandria was a contemporary and friend of St. Makarios the Great. A merchant who was baptized in adulthood, he lived at the Cells in the Egyptian desert and became priest to the monks there, surpassing all in the severity of his ascetic feats.

• Mark Eugenikos

  Hierarch, Μάρκος ο Ευγενικός

  St. Mark Eugenikos was Metropolitan of Ephesus in the fifteenth century. At the Council of Ferrara-Florence he alone among the Greek bishops refused to sign the union with Rome, and his firmness, tradition relates, led the Pope to say that nothing had been accomplished.

• Arsenios of Corfu

  Hierarch, Αρσένιος Κερκύρας

  St. Arsenios was Archbishop of Corfu in the tenth century, a native of Bethany in Palestine according to tradition. He protected his flock, interceding with the emperor on their behalf, and composed hymns still used by the Church.

• Euphrasia of Nicomedia

  Holy Woman, Ευφρασία

  St. Euphrasia was a Christian woman of noble family in Nicomedia during the persecution of Maximian. Refusing to sacrifice to the idols, she was handed over to a soldier to be dishonored; tradition relates that she preserved her chastity by a stratagem that cost her her life, being beheaded.

• Meletios Galesiotes

  Venerable, Μελέτιος ο Γαλησιώτης

  St. Meletios was a monk of Mount Galesion near Ephesus in the thirteenth century. He opposed the union with Rome imposed by Michael VIII Palaiologos and for this was imprisoned, exiled, and had his tongue cut out.
