Meletios Galesiotes

Venerable Meletios the Confessor of Mount Galesion.

St. Meletios was a monk of Mount Galesion near Ephesus in the thirteenth century. He opposed the union with Rome imposed by Michael VIII Palaiologos and for this was imprisoned, exiled, and had his tongue cut out.

He reposed in 1286 and is honored as a confessor. He is commemorated on January 19.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Meletios Galesiotes is commemorated on January 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 1 of the civil calendar.
