Mark Eugenikos

St. Mark of Ephesus, defender of Orthodoxy at the Council of Florence.

St. Mark Eugenikos was Metropolitan of Ephesus in the fifteenth century. At the Council of Ferrara-Florence he alone among the Greek bishops refused to sign the union with Rome, and his firmness, tradition relates, led the Pope to say that nothing had been accomplished.

Returning to Constantinople he strengthened the people in the Orthodox faith until his repose in 1444. He is commemorated on January 19.

On the New Calendar, Mark Eugenikos is commemorated on January 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 1 of the civil calendar.
