Makarios of Alexandria

Venerable Makarios of Alexandria, ascetic of the Cells.

St. Makarios of Alexandria was a contemporary and friend of St. Makarios the Great. A merchant who was baptized in adulthood, he lived at the Cells in the Egyptian desert and became priest to the monks there, surpassing all in the severity of his ascetic feats.

He reposed in peace at a great age in the late fourth century. He is commemorated on January 19 together with St. Makarios of Egypt.

On the New Calendar, Makarios of Alexandria is commemorated on January 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 1 of the civil calendar.
