Cyril of Gortyna

Hieromartyr Cyril, Bishop of Gortyna in Crete, beheaded in extreme old age.

Saint Cyril was bishop of Gortyna in Crete and, tradition relates, was already very old when he was arrested during the persecution of Diocletian. Condemned to be burned, he was preserved unharmed and was then beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cyril of Gortyna is commemorated on June 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 27 of the civil calendar.
