Niphon of Athos

Venerable Niphon of Kapsokalyvia on Mount Athos, hermit and disciple of Saint Maximos the Hutburner.

Saint Niphon was the son of a priest from Lukovo in Epirus and became a monk on Mount Athos in the fourteenth century. He lived in the wilderness of Kapsokalyvia as a companion of Saint Maximos the Hutburner and was renowned for his strict asceticism and gifts of foresight. He reposed in 1411.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Niphon of Athos is commemorated on June 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 27 of the civil calendar.
