Saint Methodius the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, who restored the holy icons and established the Sunday of Orthodoxy.
Saint Methodius was born in Syracuse in Sicily and became a monk and later a leading defender of the icons under the iconoclast emperors. He was imprisoned for years in a tomb-like cell and endured harsh treatment.
After the death of the emperor Theophilus he was made patriarch in 843 and, with the empress Theodora, restored the veneration of the icons. The first Sunday of Great Lent, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, was instituted under him. He reposed in 847.

On the New Calendar, Methodius the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople is commemorated on June 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 27 of the civil calendar.
