Cyril Phileotes

Venerable Cyril Phileotes, ascetic of Thrace and counsellor of emperors.

Venerable Cyril was born in the village of Philea in Thrace in the eleventh century. Though married, he lived a life of great austerity, working as a sailor and later withdrawing to a life of prayer near his home, where a small community gathered around him.

Tradition relates that the emperor Alexios Komnenos visited him for counsel. He reposed in peace in the early twelfth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cyril Phileotes is commemorated on December 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 15 of the civil calendar.
