Demetrios the New of Basarabov

Venerable Demetrios the New of Basarabov, patron of Bucharest.

Demetrios was a shepherd of the village of Basarabov on the river Lom in Bulgaria in the thirteenth century who became a monk and then a hermit in a cave near the village, living in prayer and great humility.

His relics were found incorrupt and worked many miracles; in 1774 they were brought to Bucharest, where he is honored as protector of the city.

On the New Calendar, Demetrios the New of Basarabov is commemorated on October 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 9 of the civil calendar.
