  Nestor the Martyr

  Martyr, Νέστωρ

  St. Nestor was a young Christian of Thessaloniki, a disciple of the Great Martyr Demetrios. When the gladiator Lyaios was slaying challengers to the delight of the Emperor Maximian, Nestor received the blessing of the imprisoned Demetrios, entered the arena with the prayer, God of Demetrios, help me, and overthrew the boastful champion.

  Kyriakos was steward of the Great Church of Constantinople and was elected Patriarch in 595, succeeding Saint John the Faster. He governed the Church in the reigns of Maurice and Phocas and built a church of the Theotokos in the Diakonissa quarter.

  Demetrios was a shepherd of the village of Basarabov on the river Lom in Bulgaria in the thirteenth century who became a monk and then a hermit in a cave near the village, living in prayer and great humility.

• Nestor the Chronicler

  Venerable, Νέστωρ ο Χρονογράφος

  Nestor entered the Kiev Caves monastery in his youth under Saint Theodosios and was ordained hierodeacon. He wrote the lives of Saints Boris and Gleb and of Saint Theodosios, and is honored as the author of the Tale of Bygone Years, the earliest chronicle of the Rus.
