  Demetrios the Great Martyr

  Martyr, Δημήτριος ο Μεγαλομάρτυς

  St. Demetrios the Great Martyr and Myrrh-Streamer was a young nobleman and military commander of Thessaloniki, martyred under the Emperor Maximian at the beginning of the fourth century. Imprisoned for openly teaching the faith, he blessed the young Nestor, who defeated the gladiator Lyaios in the arena; for this Demetrios was run through with spears in his prison.

• Commemoration of the Great Earthquake

  On October 26, 740, in the reign of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Isaurian, a great earthquake struck Constantinople, destroying walls and churches. The people understood it as a call to repentance and turned to the Theotokos and Saint Demetrios, whose feast it was.

  Loupos was the faithful servant of Saint Demetrios who stood by his master at his martyrdom, gathered his blood-stained garment and ring, and worked healings with them among the people of Thessalonica.

• Joasaph of Dionysiou

  Martyr, Ιωάσαφ ο Οσιομάρτυς

  Joasaph was a monk and iconographer of the monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos, tonsured by the abbot Stephen. Longing for martyrdom, he went to Constantinople with the abbot's blessing.

  Artemidoros and Basil are commemorated together in the Synaxarion of this day. Tradition relates that they confessed Christ and were beheaded; the details of their lives are not preserved.

• George of Ioannina (Translation of Relics)

  Saint, Γεώργιος ο εν Ιωαννίνοις

  George, a poor groom from the village of Tzourchli in Epirus, was hanged at Ioannina in 1838 for refusing to deny Christ after a false accusation that he had once become a Muslim. His relics were found incorrupt and became a source of many miracles.
